It’s one of the most populous areas in Melbourne, with a huge range of things to do, including a superb art gallery.
With its huge multicultural population, the city of Monash, in Melbourne’s southeast, has much to offer visitors. The main shopping strips in suburbs like Burwood and Oakleigh offer up a feast for the senses. Anyone with a hunger should check out the Greek bakeries and cafes in the former and the many Asian supermarkets and kitchenware stores in the latter.
It’s also home to one of Melbourne’s premier shopping destinations. Chadstone has 500 stores, from luxury labels to big department stores, a cinema, food outlets and Australia’s first LEGOLAND Discovery Centre.
At Wheelers Hill, head to the Monash Gallery of Art, one of Australia’s leading public art institutions. It holds one of the country’s most significant collections of Australian photography, with more than 2,000 works representing the history and development of the medium here. There are also children’s exhibits and activities to keep young ones entertained.
Looking to get outdoors? The City of Monash hosts a number of excellent cycling trails, including the 13km Scotchmans Creek Trail that starts at Jells Park Lake in Wheelers Hill, then, when it heads off road, takes in wetlands and reserves before finishing at Warrigal Road. On a fine day, it’s the perfect outing.
