The heart of Stonnington is one of Melbourne’s most famous shopping precincts. But there’s more to these suburbs than Chapel Street.
It’s only just a few kilometres from Melbourne’s CBD, but there are plenty of reasons to head towards Stonnington City, a gathering of suburbs that includes South Yarra, Prahran, Armadale and Malvern.
One of its busiest areas is Chapel Street, which stretches from South Yarra to Windsor. Designer fashion is the name of the game at the South Yarra end, but the stores and vibe become edgier as you head further south. You could definitely spend all day — and into the night — window shopping, sipping coffee and snacking on delicious dishes at eateries like Fonda Mexican and Hawker Hall.
All of the suburbs are quite different though. High Street Armadale is quite refined, with sophisticated boutiques sitting alongside antique stores, while Malvern’s Glenferrie Road has more than 400 stores, cafes and eateries ready to explore. Then, of course, there’s Prahran Market, with its fresh food provedores.
Arts and culture play an important part in the life of Stonnington. Chapel off Chapel is a theatre complex in Prahran that hosts more than 450 performances each year. The council also produces a program of events showcasing opera, jazz, performing arts and kids’ activities in venues, including many of the parks, throughout the year.
