City of Yarra

Its borders follow the river and the edge of Melbourne’s CBD, so there’s plenty to discover in the City of Yarra.

Located just a few kilometres from the city, they’re some of the best-known suburbs in all of Melbourne — Collingwood, Richmond, Fitzroy and Carlton North — right alongside others that deserve to be discovered.

Visitors head to Brunswick, Gertrude and Smith streets to acquaint themselves with hipster heaven. Along these streets, you find the boutiques of successful local designers, clean-lined bars, quirky cafes and independent galleries and book stores. Spend all day discovering their treasures and ducking into side streets to ogle huge street-art murals.

To the east is Abbotsford, where you’ll find green spaces surrounding the Abbotsford Convent, which now houses artists’ studios, galleries, pretty cafes and venues for all kinds of events, from workshops to weddings. Almost next door is Collingwood Children’s Farm, a little touch of country life right in the suburbs, where kids can learn about animals and how a farm operates.

For a taste of another culture, head to Victoria Street in Richmond. Along its length, you’ll find Asian grocers and stores, alongside some of the best Vietnamese restaurants in Melbourne. Fancy a pho or a feed of rice paper rolls? The biggest decision you’ll need to make is just which eatery to choose.
