In 2016 Rich transformed the gallery into a studio space where she painted people’s portraits from life, working on her quirky still life paintings and talking to visitors and school groups about her art practice. Her 2018 residency expands on that concept, bringing to it an added element of diversity and depth.
Using the artist studio attached to the fortyfivedownstairs contemporary art gallery as her base from 20 February to 18 March, Rich will take to the streets of Melbourne and photograph willing subjects before bringing the images back to the studio and turning them into painted portraits.
After her residency, Robyn will present her new series of work in an exhibition in the Large Gallery at fortyfivedownstairs, and will continue painting in the gallery space. Each of the participants will be invited to the opening night, creating at once a more diverse audience for her work and for the gallery, and a meeting place for previously unacquainted Melburnians.
Visitors are welcome to register their interest in having their portrait painted, but bookings are not essential.
