Melbourne’s Best Delis

Dotted around Melbourne are a number of quaint delis that may look unassuming, though once inside present a world of different breads, dips, cheeses, cured meats and everything in between

Speak to your deli worker and try some of the amazing products, then take some home to the family and enjoy the praise. We have found a few of the best around Melbourne and there is sure to be one right in your backyard.

1. That’s Amore, Thomastown

Giorgio Linguanti arrived in Melbourne in 2004 not knowing a word of English. Within four years he had built an amazing deli specialising in cheese. Since then his business has grown to include his specialty mozzarella, a range of hard and soft cheeses, matured cheeses and buffalo milk. That’s Armore [66 Latitude Boulevard, Thomastown] also offer a cheese making class for beginners — check out their website for all the details.

2. Continental Deli, Hawthorn

“Best roll in town” is scribbled on a blackboard out the front Continental Deli [676-680 Glenferrie Road, Hawthorn] in Hawthorn, and for good reason. At lunch time you will find kids from the local schools pack into this deli to grab a large, affordable, and most of all, delicious roll. Filled with basically anything your heart desires, there are many different types of meats, olives, cheeses, spreads and much more. Further inside the shop, behind the sandwich bar, you’ll see what looks like an unorganised of variety canned goods. In reality, these are some of the best preservatives from all around the world. Grab your roll, take a walk around the small but very interesting shop and maybe even take some treats home for the family!

A local favourite, Altona Fresh [62-76 Second Avenue, Altona North] is a one-stop shop for all your dinner needs. Sandra is at the helm of the deli and will give you some hints and tips if you let her know what you are planning on cooking for dinner. The deli has a huge range of items including dips, olives and everything you need to make the perfect antipasti platter for any visiting friends or relatives. Watch the ladies delicately slice your meat, fresh from the bone, or pick one of the 250 cheeses Altona Fresh stocks at any one time. There can be a wait at times, but if you like, you can call ahead and order.

5. Uncle's Smallgoods, Dandenong

The Uncle's Smallgoods [123 Thomas Street, Dandenong] family, value the quality of their products and the happiness of their customers above all else. Each product is handcrafted with care using time honoured techniques. They’re also made daily in small batches, to ensure you enjoy freshly smoked goods. The shop in Dandenong has a smokehouse right out the backdoor of the deli, so you can be sure the meat is fresh. The guys at Uncle's have over 20 years’ experience in meat smoking ('meatsperience' as they call it), so head in and have a chat to the experts. 6. Pantry Deli, Brighton

The Pantry is a Bayside institution and has recently expanded into a space that was once a sushi restaurant right next door, but is now known as the Pantry Delicatessen [1 Church Street, Brighton]. The store specialises in premade meals. At any one time there are over 30 large dishes sitting in front of busy parents who are looking for delicious and healthy meals to take home to their families. As with most delis, there’s a large range of cured meats, artisan cheeses and freshly made breads, as well as a large selection of pastries and treats. What is unique about this deli though, is their extensive pizza menu. Sit down outside and enjoy some Italian inspired pizza, or take it home with your deli items to a family who will definitely be left with smiles on their faces.
