Shop the boutiques, indulge at its eateries and sip happily at hip bars. Stylish Prahan has it all.
Prahran is renowned for its bevy of upscale boutique shops along Chapel Street, but you’ll find there’s more to this inner-city suburb than just shopping.
Work up an appetite with a walk around Victoria Gardens. Tucked away in a residential area, the park is the perfect escape from the busy, shop-lined streets of Prahran. There are walking paths, a colourful playground and a large oval where dogs can go off leash. The park also still retains some of its Victorian structures, staircases and monuments, which are dotted throughout the greenery, and its open spaces make it a popular spot for live theatre, concerts and exercise classes.
Looking for a cafe in Prahran? Check out Tall Timber for Niccolo coffee that’s roasted in-house, all-day breakfasts and lunch offerings including burgers, pasta, chicken and salads. The walls of exposed white brick, timber furnishings and pot plants overflowing across the communal tables feel warm and welcoming.
For lunch or dinner (with or without a cheeky cocktail on the side), make a beeline to Yoku Ono Ramen + Sake. The silky ramen draws a crowd from near and far and the sushi, gyoza and matcha cheesecake are simply divine. It’s like you’ve fallen asleep and woken up in late-night Tokyo.
For a bar that ticks all the right boxes, make your way to White Oaks Saloon. This Southern-inspired venue has a cocktail list that is bound to impress, with quirky concoctions and names to match, like Texas Fizz (hibiscus liqueur, lemon and orange juice, lavender and sparkling wine) and Tru American Pie (vanilla vodka, cloudy apple juice, apple bitters and cinnamon). There’s also a range of craft beers imported from the United States. Add bar snacks like sweet potato corn bread, pork sliders, deep fried shrimp tacos and fried chicken, and you’ve got a complete night out.
While Prahran Market might technically be located in South Yarra, locals and visitors also do their shopping at Prahran Grocer, a little farther south on High Street. Family-owned and with a passion for local produce for local customers, it’s the perfect destination for gourmet produce at a competitive price. Make it part of your trip to Prahran and your stomach will thank you.
It wouldn’t be a visit to Prahran with a little bit of shopping, right? Narrow down your hit list and make a beeline for Greville Street, where you can fill your record shelves at Greville Records, custom-make your own t-shirts (what better present for that person who has everything!?) at Das T-Shirt Automat or window shop the wedding dresses at Jane Hill and The Bridal Atelier.
With a reputation for young, hip things, Prahran is home to many of the best bars and clubs in Melbourne. OneSixOne is one example, infamous for punters partying well into the light-filled mornings on its original 70s light-up dancefloor. Depending on the night, you can enjoy DJs spinning tracks or live bands rocking out.
