It’s part of Melbourne’s growth corridor and the landscape of Plumpton is changing quickly as it welcomes new arrivals.

Not so long ago, much of the land around this area was undeveloped, but with Melbourne expanding apace it should come as no surprise that this region, once part of an old route to the goldfields, would soon become an attractive option. Apart from vacant land, however, the area around Bonnybrook has much to recommend it, including access to some of Melbourne’s newest train stations and infrastructure.

This is part of the local wine region and Plumpton is home to two wineries. Witchmont Estate is a hidden gem just 30 minutes from Melbourne’s CBD. It has 26 hectares of land under eight varieties of vine, from shiraz to pinot gris. You can taste these award-winning drops, some of them exported all over the world, at the on-site Avanti Restaurant, serving delicious Italian fare.

Nearby is Galli Estate Winery, where the viticulturalists practise organic methods and winemaker Ben Ranken believes in letting the grapes do the talking — he uses wild yeasts and minimal filtration, and racks the wines during the full moon. Taste the range at the cellar door throughout the week, or make a booking at the restaurant.

For a total change of scenery, get a team together and head for Xtreme Paintball. There are three fields, including the Wasteland that’s littered with old cars and junk to hide behind, for hours of fun and action. Kids can play Juniorball, with smaller, slower ammunition, on their own fields.
